SANTA FE, NM – With an investment of 21.5 million dollars, the Santa Fe airport will expand its facilities to provide better service to travelers, as announced by the City Council.

On March 29, Mayor Alan Webber and Airport Advisory Board Chairman Chris Rivera led the groundbreaking ceremony for the terminal and parking expansion project at the airport center.

“This project has been on the runway and is now taking off. The airport is an important part of Santa Fe’s future, it represents economic opportunity and support for tourism. This $21.5 million investment will enhance the customer experience, and it’s just the first phase. After this, we will go for another $20 million investment,” said Mayor Webber.

Rivera said the changes being made to the parking garage and terminal will improve traffic flow, as well as maintain a scenic character by adding seating capacity.

“The addition of a gateway gives airlines the ability to add routes. The more visitors we can welcome, the better for tax revenues and the municipal budget,” he commented.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in January 2023, while authorities are currently managing resources for the design of the second phase.

Key features of the project include more than 700 spaces designed for short- and long-term parking and staff parking, public and commercial curbside circulation, solar energy coordination, waiting lanes for digital platform vehicles, and landscaping, bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Also, an additional departure/arrival gate, expanded security area, additional restrooms, administrative facilities, baggage claim in a renovated portable building, and the inclusion of public art are also contemplated.

In addition, counters will be replaced, baggage conveyor belt will be added, airline offices will be reconfigured; concessions facilities will be changed; entrance areas will be remodeled; and a sprinkler system will be installed throughout the building.
